Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility refers to the different actions performed by companies to increase the impact directed at the communities in which they operate. These actions focus on the quality of employment practices, human rights, relationships with the consumers, contribution to the community, environmental concerns and legal conformity.

The vision of the companies, in relation to their targets and political schema, has been modified throughout the last decade, provoked to a great extent by vast societal changes. The elemental catalyst of this change has been generated by the increased leading role of the consumers and the way they operate within the market.

Both the products and the persons in charge of production are evaluated by criteria that go further than simply evaluating quality and efficiency. A new concept explains the closeness of the current relationship between successful products and the perception held by the consumer of that product, using this as the standard for grading the engagement of society on the part of the company.

In 2005, the World Bank Institute Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility Team jointly with the Young Americas Business Trust, the Inter-American Development Bank and Global Development Learning Network organized a series of videoconferences as a follow up activity for the "CSR Youth Course" delivered in Latin America.
