Young Artists Learn to Market Their Talents
Cultural and art industries represent major opportunities for young people to develop sustainable enterprise due to its large market size. To create opportunities for young people to benefit from, YABT in cooperation with the Alcaldia Mayor de Bogota organized a workshop titled ‘Business Laboratories for Cultural and Creative Business’. The five days of workshop took place from January 12 to 16, in Bogota, Colombia.
It was also a pilot program for collaboration in a follow-up project by YABT, the Alcadia Mayor de Bogota, and el Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogota. The workshop is one of the first in a series of community outreach program as part of the festival, which will take place in Bogota from March 19 to April 4.
The workshop was held in the Luis Angel Arango library of Banco de la Republica where young artists in the field of visual arts, music and theater have participated and had a chance to understand the ways to market their talents.
The workshop is part of Nex Links program, initiated by Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) and funded by Special Multilateral Fund for Integral Development (FEMCIDI) of the OAS, and also was supported by Jóvenes Conviven por Bogotá and the Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro.
The training introduced participants the ways to make the best out of their talents in business, and to generate income from their given artistic skills. The training covered core concepts and the most needed elements in cultural enterprises, such as markets, finance, production, costs, legal issues, management of cultural enterprises among others.
The trainers of YABT Colombia conducted the curriculum of the workshop with the support of specialists in the field as Carolina Vargas, a musician specializing in Cultural Management, a professor at the Universidad Pedagógica de Colombia, who runs an organization specialized in Cultural Management; Guillermo Prieto R a professional in performing arts, a director of Drama as well a professor at the Universidad Pedagógica de Colombia, a specialist in Cultural Management; and Jaime Vargas, a lawyer and a member of the theater group Club el Nogal, a specialist in cultural law and contracts and the cultural and social projects developments.
Nidia Cruz, one participant said "It was very difficult to understand the business concepts, because I had never learned such as an artist. However, through the workshop, I could envision creating an enterprise while generating employment from my own talent and artistic abilities. Indeed I enjoyed the workshop very much and hope to continue with the learned lessons to better use my skills.”
Carlos Mario Lopez, Program Manager of Americas Business Trust (YABT), said "It was one of the first YABT’s workshop targeting young artists. It may sounds challenging that artists to be interested in setting up enterprises, especially marketing their talents. However, the practical hands-on methodology of the workshop was effective in introducing entrepreneurship to participants as another stage to showcase their artistic skills and generating employment. "
As a next step, the participants will be committed to bring and replicate the learned lessons to their own communities to promote entrepreneurial culture. YABT will continuously follow up and support their individual initiatives.
